On May 10,1997, a earthquake known as Qayen, Ardekul or Qaen earthquake, shook Northern Iran's Khorasan Province hard. The earthquake was measured up to 7.3 on the moment magnitude scale. It killed at least 1,567, injured 2,300, 50,000 homeless, destroyed 10,533 houses and damaged 5,474 houses, leaving thousands homeless.
The earthquake was caused by the collision of the Arabian and European tectonic plates located Abiz Fault, part of the Sistan suture zone of eastern Iran.
The Iranian government sent 80 tons of supplies to Mashhad where the relief efforts were being coordinated. The government also sent volunteers to help the people trapped in the rubble.I feel that Iran should have higher earthquake engineering so that the buildings in Iran would be able to withstand the earthquake.
